Product Review: SooFoo

March 5, 2015 By Matt Cunningham

SooFoo-Shots-6.12.14-089-Edit-final1-225x300As a vegan on the go, I am always looking for products that are easy to prepare, versatile, rich in fiber and have minimal ingredients. And one more minor detail; they should taste good! SooFoo meets my expectations and then some. In recent weeks I have prepared a wide variety of their quinoa products for use in a number of dishes. I’ve found them to be delicious on their own as a quick snack or an ideal complement to other plant-powered foods. Each 6 ounce package Non-GMO verified and certified organic by the USDA. Containing little to no sugar and about 24 grams of protein, SooFoo’s homegrown grains include barley, buckwheat, rye berries, brown rice, oats, wheat berries and green, black and brown lentils.

All of the packets are easy to prepare with minimal steps required. After bringing the package contents, two cups of water and a splash of oil to a boil, reduce the heat and cover. After about 40 minutes of medium heat, a fluffy mixture of fibrous grains is the result. I prepared the original (plain) package on a Sunday with plans to enjoy it for breakfast the following morning after an hour in the pool. My wife (Ashley) and I split the package in half. I mixed my morning quinoa with some frozen blueberries, some coconut milk and a banana. The hearty mixture left me nourished until noon. With the fruit providing some natural sweeteners, I had a colorful bowl packed with antioxidants and vitamins.

SooFoo-Shots-6.12.14-032-edit-225x300The Moroccan Medley (or Rockin’ Moraccan as I’ve nicknamed it) has a smoky bite of flavor that makes it a tasty side. I had some for a mid-afternoon snack one day while using the remainder in a veggie bowl with some kale and spinach and mixed veggies including squash, zucchini and red peppers. The Hint of Curry flavor was hearty with hints of onion and tomato. Part of our weekly bulk cooking often includes a mixture of parsnips and multicolored carrots with some garlic and spices. After pressure cooking them and then broiling in the oven we combined the veggies with the curry grains and had a delectable meal combined with some massaged (with avocado) kale. Any variety of SooFoo would make a wholesome addition to any type of salad.

SooFoo’s website is rich in content with recipes, nutritional content and information on where to find the products. SooFoo can be purchased directly from the website and the store locator will direct you to your nearest retailer. I found every variety at Cost Plus World Market for a very reasonable price. Next time, I could very well take advantage of the options to buy in bulk or by the case from the website.

That’s a great question Malissa – I travel quite a bit for a work and eating on the road is always a challenge. For me, it’s all about planning ahead. I never travel empty-handed, whether it’s a bag of almonds in my pack, almond butter sandwiches for the plane or instant oatmeal and fruit for my hotel. I always call ahead to hotels and ask for a refrigerator. Do you have a cooler in your truck? That would be ideal for storing some essentials like veggies, hummus, quinoa, wraps, etc. Cheers!
