The Most Important Question You Can Ask Yourself

December 2, 2010 By Mandi

From time to time I find myself getting jaded. Feeling as if what I am currently doing with my life is pointless. Unsure if I am on the right path or wasting my time.

Sound familiar?

Its common for humans to get disheartened  with their lives and goals after a long time of pursuit. It is easy to get frustrated with ourselves because we have no idea what we really want, we just know our current situation is not it. How does this get solved? How do you wake up every morning, excited to tackle our day even if you don’t know where you are headed?

What is the most important question you can ask yourself when you are feeling frustrated, challenged or depressed?

What is Important Right Now?

Not tomorrow, not 5 years from now, not during retirement. What is important to you at this very moment? If you didn’t have the future to consider, what would you do today? Would you spend more time with your kids? Start writing your memoirs? Volunteer at a farm sanctuary? Send an important email? Clean the kitchen? Obviously, your important things will change from day to day but this will help you reflect and understand what is truly important to you in the grand scheme of things.

Try to keep your list down to 3 things, and actively take steps do do those things today. If it is something that will take more than a day, just start.

The point is to live passionately and make sure that every day you are doing something you really want to do, no matter how trivial it may seem. I find that when I am feeling most down and disheartened, it is because  I spend my days doing things I have to do instead of things I want to do. The idea is not to completely abandon your adult responsibilities, but to make time for your passions.

So.. What is important to you right now?

Love this list. Did you make a difference with someone? Well this week I know for sure you did. Last night I was crying myself to sleep and twittered a few words from Sarah McLachlan’s Angel and all you did was say you liked that song too. Suddenly I didn’t feel alone anymore. It’s amazing how complete strangers can dry each other’s tears. Thanks Elysa. <3
