The Absolute Best All-Natural Deodorants

July 15, 2010 By Mandi

Traditional deodorants are overflowing with horribly toxic ingredients like aluminum (linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s), Parabens, PEGs, petrochemicals, and synthetics. When applied liberally every single day, you can imagine what the buildup of these chemicals do to your body as you grow older.

But the truth is, nobody likes to be the smelly person in the room.  Although it requires slightly more work it is very possible to smell great while remaining toxin-free. I believe that a well rounded regimen can completely eliminate any funky odors that might spring about, even if you are an excessively sweaty mess running laps during a summer day. Everyone is unique and your regime really depends on your needs and lifestyle but here is what works for me.  This process works for me through hours of circus training, yoga or running outside in the heat.

  • Eat a healthy vegan diet consisting of whole foods. (no refined foods, sugars, and preservatives).
  • Wash with Dr Bronner’s Tea Tree soap. It is naturally antimicrobial!
  • Allow pits to dry completely. Then apply Weleda citrus spray. I typically keep my arms up and frolic around my apartment like a lunatic until they dry.
  • Apply some baby powder to help with sweating. I currently use Burt’s Bees Baby Bee powder, but will be switching to another brand after I am out. (BB’s works wonders but is owned by Clorox – a very un-vegan company!) Perhaps Farm Baby?
  • Halfway through the day, or right before embarking on intense physical activity I refresh the Weleda spray with a small bottle in my bag.

I think the best way to combat the stinkies is with a healthy diet, a combination of products and re-application.

Here are my favorite products that work by neutralizing odor causing bacteria, instead of just masking smells like many natural deodorants tend to do.

Weleda spray deodorant

Erbaviva Lemon Sage deodorant

Pit Putty by Bubble and Bee

Miessence Tahitian Breeze Roll-on Deodorant

Aubrey Organics Calendula Blossom Natural Deodorant Spray

Thai Crystal Deodorant Stone

i have started using Onmbra and i am sold! I am a STINKY chick, no amount of veggies seems to help…and Ombra is the only all natural pit stick that seems to work for me (i haven’t tried all of the above). They are a Canadian company and from the website:
No animal testing is done, the packaging is environmentally friendly and the contents biodegradabl

Thanks for the article, i may try some of the others as well!

Try applying before bedtime, it’s actually more effective on dry skin.

Thanks for the info.! 🙂 I have tried Tom’s of Maine stick deodorants in the past, but it seemed like they never dried and were very thick. I recently bought natural care Tom’s of Maine Citrus Zest crystal confidence roll on and I really like it. It smells good, but you may need to re-apply if doing vigorous exercise!

I have that thai crystal but I'm not a big fan. I'll try the Weleda stuff – my coop has it. The only thing I've found to remotely work is the Kiss My Face patchouli style roll-on…even though I hate patchouli.

I love this!! I really needed to find out which natural deodorants really work as some don't really cover up stenches or don't really work at all.
I also wanted to point out that the In Love Deodorant is not vegan as it contains beeswax.
Other than that, this was great!

Oh! Thanks for pointing that out Frani! In Love is the only one I have not tried but found many great reviews on. Guess that one slipped by! It's removed. 🙂

The Thai Crystal works good for me when it is used with other products. Kiss My Face has never worked for me. Its amazing how different everyone's chemistry is!

Hi Sarah! I used to use Toms but it would froth up when I worked out! Talk about embarrassing. Also, Toms is owned by Colgate now. 🙁

I'm a big fan of Desert Essence's Tea Tree Oil deodorant. It doesn't stop perspiration 100%, but it certainly prevents any odor. It also heals razor burn and heat rash. And it smells nice. 🙂

    Hi Mandi,

    Thanks for the list!

Lavilin would be a really great addition. No parabens, no aluminum, and lasts several days per application. Wonderful product!
