BC Footwear has gone vegan!

Yep, you heard me correctly!  This cool, laid-back, LA based footwear company has taken the plunge into compassion-land and is now making all of their shoes with 100% animal free components and they are Peta approved.

According to the kind folks at BC Footwear, the reason why they made this awesome change is because “(w)e want to do our part to minimize the suffering of animals.”  How awesome is that!?  I told you it was some exciting news!

I was fortunate enough to receive two pairs of BC Footwear booties to test out and let me tell you…I was impressed.  When I pulled each pair out of their respective boxes, the first thing that I was struck by was the quality of these shoes.  There was no strange chemical smell that can sometimes accompany man-made leather.  Not only were both of these pairs of shoes super cute, they were both beautifully made from high-end, quality materials.

Ok, enough chit chat, let’s get to the shoes…shall we?!

First up is the Scale Ankle Boot

This ankle boot is made gorgeous vegan leather with a cool angular flap detail, subtle topstitching, a peep toe and a 3.25″ stacked heel.  I got the grey which is more of a vegan suede that is so incredibly soft.  I styled these booties with a pair of cropped, distressed girlfriend jeans and they were just perfect.  The best part about them is that they are really comfortable!  All of BC Footwear’s shoes are made with high performance Ortholite insoles so they are cute and comfortable!  I wore this pair for a night out with friends and found that not only were they easy to walk in, the material was also very breathable, which is awesome because who wants sweaty feat…am I right?

Available in three colors; grey, black and tan, these are the perfect booties as we start to transition into the cooler months.

Next up is the Ringmaster Ankle Boot

This sleek ankle boot is made with a vegan fabric that is super soft with a bit of stretch that snugs your ankle in all the right places.  With at 3″ stacked heel, these booties can be worn with jeans or dressed up with a dress or skirt.  I got these in dark taupe which is such a great neutral and I paired them with a casual denim skirt and t-shirt for the perfect weekend, running around town outfit.  These booties were really comfortable to walk around in and the stretch fabric made the fit around my ankle just right, no sagging or bagging!  The Ringmaster Ankle Boot comes in three colors; taupe, black and black exotic.

T.U.K. Footwear has recently become PETA approved and has also launched a collection using a new tech synthetic leather and suede including TUKskin.  TUKskin is a high quality synthetic leather that is breathable and can be polished like leather but is 100% cruelty free.

The super cool folks over at T.U.K. Footwear offered to let me test out a pair from their new TUKskin line and I was happy to oblige.  Being a lover of all things cat and cat related, I thought I would try out the Kitty Mary Jane.

So first off, how cute are these shoes?  Adorbs…right!?  When I have them on I can’t stop looking down at that cute kitty face and smiling.  I’ve noticed that these shoes make other people smile as well.  In addition to being super cute, they are also really well made.  From the topstitching details to the sturdy silver buckle and 1 1/2 inch lug heel, these are some quality shoes that were made to last.

I decided to test these bad boys out while running around the city doing errands.  I am happy to say that they were really comfortable the entire time.  My feet always seem to sweat in certain shoes and boots that I wear even during the cooler months.  Not with my TUKskin Kitty Mary Janes!   These shoes hold up to T.U.K. Footwear’s claim that TUKskin is breathable as my feet stayed dry and comfortable all day.

Cats not your thing?  Not to worry, there are other cool styles in the TUKskin line for you to choose from.  Word on the street is that T.U.K. Footwear is going to be broadening their vegan offerings with a new ladies only collection to launch in SS18.  So soon there will be even more styles to choose from!

BANGS Shoes are modeled after simple work boots worn by workers and farmers discovered by founder, Hannah Davis, while she was teaching English in China.  The name BANGS comes from the Chinese character for “help”, which ties right into their slogan: Your Adventure Helps Others Find Theirs.  BANGS Shoes is all about helping others and doing good.  First, their shoes are 100% vegan which right off the bat help the environment and the animals…Yay!  But BANGS Shoes’ good work doesn’t stop there, they have a social mission where they invest in entrepreneurs around the world by providing loans through their nonprofit partner, Kiva.org.  BANGS Shoes’ contributes 20% of net profits into these loans which give people the funds they need to help make their business succeed.

So the good people at BANGS Shoes let me take a pair of their shoes out for test run.  I got the Onyx High Top because I can just never have too many pairs of high tops.  I already knew that I liked the look of the BANGS Shoes’ high tops, but I wasn’t sure how they would hold up to a weekend hike with Jack.  Well I am happy to report that these shoes were great!  One of the things that I always worry about with new shoes is that they will cause blisters.  Not BANGS Shoes.  Jack and I did a 5 mile hike and not a blister in site.  These shoes were comfortable and sturdy, with great arch support.  In case you are wondering, these shoes aren’t just for outdoor activities.  They are so cute and comfortable, I wore them all weekend long.

If you know me, you know that I like most of my clothes/shoes to be black.  But don’t worry, BANGS Shoes’ offers these high tops in a wide variety of non-black options.   Below are just a few of their super fun colors.

I’ve already switched out my closets so that all of my warm weather pieces are front and center and now I am in the market for some new vegan sandals to round out my look for this season. There are so many beautiful choices for spring vegan sandals that I will have my work cut out for me!

Here are some of my favorite Spring Sandals

The Alden from Bhava is a sandal and a bootie all in one.  This sandal will take you from spring to fall in stylish comfort.  Made from Italian vegan leather with a 2″ heel and natural cork insole, this is a versatile sandal that can just as easily be worn with a pair of jeans or a breezy summer dress.   In addition to black, the Alden is also available in cognac and neutral which has an interesting white/tan snakeskin look to it.

Next up is the Goodall sandal from Nicora Shoes.  Named for famous animal rights activist, Jane Goodall, this made in the U.S.A. sandal is constructed with vegan leather and recycled fabric. The red version is dyed with recycled ketchup bottles and  the black and grey stripe are dyed with recycled X-ray film.  I have no idea how they do that, all I know is that a really great looking shoe is the end result.  Here it is in grey stripe.

Beyond Skin has quite a few fabulous vegan sandal options for spring, so it was difficult to choose just one to highlight, but I decided on the Maggie faux snakeskin sandal.  This sandal is new to the SS16 line for Beyond Skin and it has been on my mind since the first time I laid eyes on it.  Yes, I have a bit of a crush on these sandals.  I love the chunky flatform sole and of course the faux snakeskin pattern is fierce.

I was really excited to hear that Vagabond was coming out with a vegan line of shoes.  Vagabond listened to their customers who were looking for vegan alternatives and as a result they created the Non Animal Collection.  I am happy to report that they have some really cool styles in this line, one being the Daria.  This sandal has a cork insole for comfort and comes in white, black and an unusual, but lovely, light apricot.  Below is the black version, because, you know, I’m all about wearing black.

I think that I can speak for most people, vegans and non vegans, when I say that we were all super excited when Matt and Nat introduced their new shoe line this spring.  Best known for making quality, fashionable handbags, Matt and Nat did the same with their new footwear.  One of the standouts for me is the Villeray sandal.  I like the minimalist look and feel of this sandal and with its wide criss-cross straps it looks as comfortable as it is fashionable.  A fan of all things shiny, the silver version is my personal favorite.

The Watson moto boot is all business. Made to withstand wear and tear while on your motorcycle, there are two versions of this boot, a standard version and a more heavy duty version which has a thicker sole and a steel toe.

One of the best ways in which we can help grow veganism is to support vegan businesses, and what better way to do that then to shop for shoes! Last summer I was staying at a friend’s house, and when we decided to go out to dinner I wished aloud that I had brought a nicer pair of shoes to wear. She offered me a pair out of her closet, and when I asked if she had any non-leather shoes I could borrow, she exclaimed, “I don’t wear plastic shoes!”*

Well, neither do I. Twenty or thirty years ago vegans may have been limited to what they could find at Payless, but now there are many breathable (and stylish!) faux leather and suede options. I thought it would be fun to show you most of the shoes in my wardrobe so you can see how easy it is to avoid leather. People like to think leather is “natural,” but 1, the tanning process is HORRIBLE for the environment, and 2, that whole “using all the parts of the animal” argument is complete baloney anyway. (Are you a 16th-century Native American? Well then.) When you put on a pair of leather shoes, you not only become a party to that environmental devastation, but you are also implicitly condoning needless cruelty.

I recommend shopping at an all-vegan shoe store like Sudo Shoes (Cambridge, MA), Moo Shoes (NYC), or Vegetarian Shoes (Brighton, UK) as opposed to DSW, since most of the DSW inventory isn’t cruelty free, and I’ve found the prices comparable at Sudo Shoes anyway. (Moo Shoes seems to be somewhat more expensive, but in fairness their rent must be through the roof.) I’ve never ordered from them, but Zappos has a vegan shoe section.

You may be wearing vegan shoes without even thinking about it—like Tevas in the summer or Bogs in the winter. (I own and love both. My Bogs boots kept my feet warm and toasty last winter, although not every boot style is vegan.) I also picked up a comfortable and very sturdy pair of Montrail running shoes from Sudo last year.

Let’s talk a bit about the environmental sustainability of leather alternatives. Kate Sheppard lays out the basic concern in this Mother Jones article:

The best I can discern from the label stamped inside of them is that they were made in China with “All Manmade Materials.” Most fake leathers are made of some kind of plastic product—which was almost certainly derived from petroleum. Some faux leathers are even made of polyvinyl chloride (better known as PVC), a product that contains, among other not-so-nice chemicals, phthalates.

Back to the plastic shoe conundrum! So yeah, if you buy a cheap pair of shoes from DSW, they’ll probably fail the sustainability test. That said, high-end vegan brands like Novacas (Spanish and Portuguese for “no cow”) claim to use eco-friendly vegetable leather:

What are the shoes made of?

We use the highest quality synthetic microfibers on the market for our footwear. Our synthetics stretch, breathe, and wear like leather and are completely PVC-free.

Are your shoes eco-friendly?

Our shoes never contain any PVC, which is often very toxic to the environment. Our materials do not contain any toxic products and, in case of fire, do not emit any toxic fumes. The materials we use are highly biodegradable. The uppers, whenever possible, are 100% biodegradable. The materials are produced in European factories known for using the highest environmental standards available in all of their manufacturing.

Even if you can’t afford a $100 pair of Novacas (and they are worth it!!), you might take comfort in the argument Jamey made during one of our vegan pow-wows at Sadhana Forest: while pleather shoes have one strike against them, he said, real leather footwear has two—environmental fail AND cruel to animals.

I suppose I should say that, for the record, I paid between $60-110 for most of the shoes I’m showing you in this post (though thanks to Sudo’s sales, I did get sweet discounts on some of them). As for durability, there is certainly a great deal of truth in the assertion that leather shoes last longer than their made-in-China-of-manmade-materials counterparts, but as with all things, you get what you pay for. A well made pair of vegan shoes can last a long time! (I still have a pair of one-inch heels I purchased at Moo Shoes in 2004, and the only reason I haven’t posted a picture is that I can’t find them in the infernal mess that is my closet.)

*It must be noted that my friend has since gone vegan! Woot woot!

Stephanie’s mission is so inspiring, her recent success is exciting, & of course, her shoes are absolutely amazing! I’ve been a huge fan and supporter of Nicora Johns since day one, and am so honored to share more about Stephanie & her brand with the Chic Vegan community. Here’s what she has to say about the future of the vegan fashion, how veganism is incorporated in her company, and what a day in the life looks like for an artisan shoemaker.

Chic Vegan – Tell me a little bit about Nicora Johns and what inspired you to create a vegan line of footwear?

Stephanie Nicora – I am a trained shoemaker, and had been making shoes out of an old barn in my backyard for about a year before starting Nicora Johns. I know a lot about leather from my craft and that means I know that leather is a very dirty material — it cannot be made without toxic chemicals and it cannot be made without the destruction of life. It’s my belief that the highly skilled art of crafting shoes is NOT exclusive to leatherwork.

CV – What makes Nicora Johns shoes different than other “vegan/man-made” shoes on the market?

SN – Aside from the quality and the handmade special touch missing from factory shoes, we also lift the veil of mystery about where the shoes and their 200 parts actually come from. We make everything locally and source everything local too. It’s a pretty short — and transparent — route from the materials factory to the Los Angeles shoemakers to the customer.

CV – What do you think is the biggest challenge for consumers who are looking to “veganize” their wardrobe? 

SN – Vegan is easy — seems all the big companies are capitalizing on us as the new niche. For me the challenge consists of the fact that, not only do I want to ‘veganize’ my wardrobe, but also I want it to be ethical too; no humans, environment or animals harmed. NOW is absolutely the best time for this! The web has made it possible for small companies to bypass the big corporations and produce fashion locally and ‘stick to their guns’ as far as ethics is concerned. It’s not always more expensive, either.

CV – What do you envision for the future of vegan fashion? 

SN – To survive, vegan fashion will have to become superior to environmentally destructive animal-derived materials. I think the cheap plastic version of vegan fashion is going to fade away compared to the vegan companies who are going out of their way to protect the planet while simultaneously helping us look good.

Some plant-based fashion entrepreneurs I admire and am proud to call my colleagues in this exciting and innovative venture are Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart of Vaute Couture, Joshua Katcher of Brave GentleMan, John Bartlett and even brands like Freedom of Animals. The list goes on, but these companies stand out to me as forward thinking, sleek, attractive and so on. Really on the cutting edge of animal-free fashion.

CV – Let’s learn a little bit more about you! What motivated you to become vegan? Was it an overnight switch or more gradual shift?

SN – It began with a medically restricted diet, which opened my eyes to what I already knew but was afraid to accept wholeheartedly. Animal production is destructive to the planet and horrifically cruel — not to mention wholly unnecessary. I don’t have a philosophical argument, nor do I have an animal rights background, I just know that I want no part of that.

CV – When people learn that you are vegan, what is the #1 question they ask and what is your response?

SN – Of course it’s the never-ending, “Where do you get your protein?” Conveniently for me my doctor recommended a plant-based diet due to the cell damage caused by animal protein consumption. My answer is usually, “My doctor said it’s best to stick to nuts, grains, beans and tempeh for protein. They’re easier for the body to digest.”

CV – Walk me through a day in your life.

SN – Meditate, yoga, factory, home, meditate. REPEAT.

CV – You are a busy gal! What do you typically eat in the span of a day to keep yourself feeling nourished & energized ? Are you a snacker?

SF – I prepare most of my food ahead of time so that I don’t feel tempted to eat junk food, and I definitely snack all day long.

Breakfast: smoothie made with almond milk, strawberries, raw/vegan/organic protein powder, kale, goji powder and cacao powder, and maybe an avocado with lemon, salt and pepper or miso soup.
Snack: low sugar raw nutrition bar, or nuts or fruit.
Lunch: leftovers – today it was vegan pozole with onion, celery, carrot, kale, hominy and tempeh topped with cilantro and avocado.
Snack: cut veggies, or fruit or nuts
Dinner: today I made a salad with spinach, tomato, carrot, celery and black beans topped with homemade vegan ranch, sunflower seeds, pepperoncini, vegan bacon bits and black olives.
Dessert: green apple. (I know, it’s totally boring, but I am low sugar. The cravings just stop after a while.)

CV – Do you have a favorite vegan indulgence?

SN – A whole wheel of Kite Hill’s White Alder vegan ‘brie’ on rice crackers.

CV – What vegan product could you not live without?

SN – Tempeh!

CV – In your wildest dreams, what will your life look like in five years?

SN – I will have sold a million pairs of leather-free shoes by the end of 2019, making a significant dent on the leather market, and competitors will be forced to follow. Half the price of the cow is the skin – destroy the demand and there won’t be any more need for supply.

Take a Look at Your Shoe Collection
Odds are some of the shoes you already own are probably vegan. Those great Converse, those cute Melissa gel sandals and those edgy Madden Girl boots are all vegan. Some of the TOMS shoes are also vegan. It’s worth it to look inside your shoes to find out what they are made of. If it’s not written, you can find the legend fairly easily online.

Don’t Be Afraid to Enquire
Whether you’re shopping in a physical store or an online one, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Here’s a list of the questions you should have answers to before you buy a new pair of shoes.

• What is the shoe made of? Is the sole synthetic or leather? (This is particularly important as many lesser quality synthetic shoes often have leather soles)
• Which type of glue was used in the production of the shoe? Is it water-based?
• Where were they made? Were they produced by local artisans or in a EU country (which has fair labor laws)? If they were made in a country which promotes the exploitation of workers, you probably want to avoid buying them.
• What is the impact of the production of the shoes for the environment? Is the brand committed to being eco-friendly?

Avoid the Usual Suspects (and the Not so Usual Ones)

• Leather
• Suede
• Nubuck
• Glues that either contain animal parts (such as horse hooves) or were tested on animals.
• Leather soles.

Shop High-Street
If there is no vegan shoe store in your area, fear not, most high street fashion stores offer vegan alternatives. Stores like Zara, H&M,  and ASOS offer shoes that follow the latest trend and are made from synthetic materials. Since they also sell leather products, you might want to pay special attention to the labels. The brand Steve Madden, which has stores in most major cities, has a line called “Madden Girl” which is composed of shoes that are entirely man-made, some of this brand’s other lines also have man-made alternatives. Aldo is another major shoe retailer that offers man-made shoes. Again looking at the labels is a must.

Know the Top Brands
Lucky for us vegans and animal-lovers, more and more vegan shoe brands are emerging and creating shoes that very easily surpass their animal-made counterparts. Here is a short not-so-short list of my personal favorites.

 Novacas’ Natasha Sandal

Novacas: Made in Portugal, Novacas (which mean no cow in Portuguese and Spanish) makes amazing shoes that are eco-friendly and PVC free. All the shoes fit well, last forever and the styles are classic with a contemporary twist, which means they won’t be out of style next season.

Cri de Coeur’s Emerson Studded Platform Sandals

Cri de Coeur: This company makes luxury footwear at high street prices. Cri de Coeur’s designs always follow the latest fashion and are eco-friendly. What’s not to love?

Beyond Skin’s Portia Shoe in Pale Mint

Beyond Skin: Established in London in 2001, Beyond Skin was at the forefront of the creation of vegan shoes. The designs are chic and a little vintage (which I absolutely love). Natalie Portman is also a big fan of this brand.

 Olsen Haus’ Shoe

Olsen Haus: For your absolutely fabulous vegan shoe needs. Olsen Haus creates glamorous designs that will have you exclaiming “They’re vegan!” when people stop you on the street to compliment your footwear.

Wills’ Cut Out Low Boots

 Wills: A fairly new company from London, Wills offers quality vegan footwear at high street prices. This company also pays its workers according to the European Union standards, making it animal- and human-friendly.

Nicora Johns’ Virginia Skimmer

Nicora Johns: This American company promotes the talent of American artisan shoe-makers. All the shoes are man-made, eco-friendly, socially-conscious, and vegan. They also make custom shoes (which is great if your looking for that one of a kind pair of shoes).

Krze Studio’s Asuka Stiletto

Krze Studio: Based in Los Angeles, Krze Studio offers classic footwear with an edge. If you’re looking for an edgy pair of stilettos, this is your go-to brand.

 Bourgeois Boheme’s Lindsay Boots

Bourgeois Boheme: Made of high quality Italian faux leathers and eco-friendly materials, Bourgeois Boheme’s shoes are stylish and comfortable. Their recently launched collection is trendy and mixes in the company’s logo, the lotus flower.

Stella McCartney’s Kapoor Sandals

Stella McCartney: A vegan’s ultimate dream! Stella makes the most stylish shoes. Unfortunately, they tend to be high on the price scale, but they can always be an investment piece (which is exactly how I plan to justify this purchase).

Don’t be Afraid to Shop Online
Sure, it seems scary to order shoes online without trying them on first, but most companies actually have very flexible return policies. Size guides are also available from most brands and once you’ve purchased from a brand, you can be pretty sure that other shoes from the same company will fit the same way. Another option is to try on the shoes in a brick and mortar store and then order them online. If there is no vegan shoe store in your area, your best option might just be to order online. Here’s a list of online vegan shoe stores, you can also order online from the companies mentioned above.

Quality over Quantity
It’s very tempting to buy several pairs of inexpensive shoes, but down the line it might actually be more expensive than buying shoes of higher quality. If your inexpensive shoes are broken after only a few times wearing them and you need to buy new ones, it will be more expensive than spending a bit more on quality shoes that will last you a long time. My advice: buy good quality classic pieces that every woman needs in her closet, such as black pumps, knee-high boots, nude colored strappy sandals, and limit the inexpensive shoes to trends that will last only one season. That way, you have good quality classic shoes that you can wear everyday, and some that follow the seasonal trends and that you won’t regret having splurged on if they go out of style.
