So, you think it's difficult being a vegan now? Back in 1972, when my bestie and I crossed the country, it was much more difficult. I can't tell you how many times I had to order a BLT on whole wheat toast, hold the bacon, with mustard instead of mayo. I ate a lot of vegetables that had all the life cooked out of them.

When I went out a lot with the ex's family, I checked out every restaurant his kids wanted to visit on menupages, and if I found nothing vegan, I called ahead and let them know when I was coming.

These days, it's pretty easy. There are even barbecue restaurants that can put together a great vegan meal. Health and peace.

FYI... I called ahead once to enquire about any vegan options on the menu and was told even their baked potato was rubbed with butter and all the veggie sides also had butter in them. Ya just never know.

All really great advice! Since going vegan I have found it a little harder to eat out, but only in certain restaurants. I think the only restaurant I've been to in which there was basically nothing in the way of truly vegan options was Olive Garden. I ended up having the Capellini Pomodoro and Minestrone soup because the waitress assured me there were no animal products in them. Unfortunately, I found out later that both the soup and the sauce in the pasta dish contain butter. :( However, I didn't beat myself up because now I know for next time and I can suggest somewhere other than Olive Garden, plus it put the people I was with at ease that I was able to order a delicious meal.

I just love when I can get people to go to the all-vegan restaurants with me because it's such a delight to be able to order absolutely anything on the menu.

One other thing--call ahead, especially for a special occaison. Most restaurants want happy customers & are willing to take that extra step, but sometimes they need time to prepare.

Thanks for sharing this. I always focus on the social aspects of eating out and if there is not much to choose from, I know I will not starve before I get home and can eat more. My standard go-to is a baked potato with salsa, but there is always something to tide me over enough until I get home, or I eat a snack before I leave. No big deal.

Good article, Hannah!
I live in Florida right now but have lived all over the world and been vegetarian or 'pescaterian' for most of it. I've become vegan over the past 6 months and much better off in my body as a result.
I always ate quite healthily but recently became informed as to just how cruelly animals are treated and slaughtered so that humans can be gluttons. I really did not know. Now that I have removed the blinders, my heart truly breaks every day when I see how ignorant the majority of people are when it comes to food and animals, generally speaking....how desensitized we have all become to the brutality that we all end up paying for in one way or another to maintain the corporations that seem to run the food and pharmaceutical industries and hence healthcare and overall well being of the masses.
My question is - How do we educate our friends who do not seem to care without getting too preachy or in a screaming match? I am fortunate to work on a hospital psych unit, where I am able to talk to patients about making better food choices to improve their psycho-emotional stability and physical health. But then, the hospital cafeteria serves very few interesting vegetarian dishes and no vegan choices. It's ridiculous-even the nutritionist has outdated ideas and is defensive when the word 'vegan' is mentioned. I apologize for the rant but I am so tired of the patronizing and sarcastic looks and comments I receive when I bring my lunch. Outwardly, I am very good natured and patient, but sometimes, I am frustrated at the end of my shift with the powers that be. Anyway, I like your articles and the energy I get here. Thank you.

Eating out being vegan and gluten free is super tough. There are some great options in Madison but leaving town or not picking the restaurant is difficult. Lots of iceberg salads and baked potatoes here in WI. :)

Yes, miso soup almost always has fish in it. Also you have to be careful with Indian as they use ghee in a lot of their dishes. Ghee is butter! I've even found out that in the coconut curries they use coconut milk AND cream! :(
